How do I become a popular kids friend?

Okay, so in school theres a guy named Joey he is a football player and we talk sometimes. Once was in snack bar line an actual conversation, on facebook IM (once) then I asked him how his summer was this summer and he responded and we talked. Now I really want to be his friend but I dont want to creep him out. It's been 3 weeks no talk on any type of contact. What exactly should I say to him please your help would be appreciated. I know you don't know him but what exactly can I say because I am shy and got bullied last year but then it was my best friend spreading rumors that are LIES. I then posted a facebook status everyone felt bad for me and said it was your best friend so they help me out. Popular kids. So What I should say to joey is "Hey, Joey! I was wondering if you might wanna chill somewhere sometime! Is that okay with you?" what should I alter to make better?
