Are poor white people the last acceptable group to stereotype, slander, and discriminate against?

The majority of white people in this country do not fit the rich, pampered stereotype. They've been among the poor and exploited too. Yet it's perfectly ok to slander them in everyday conversation and when you have an ear for it you see it everywhere (trailer trash, redneck, etc). How did this come to be?
